05 October 2018 The Day of Languages and Cultures The National Library of the Komi Republic is inviting everyone to take part in our Sunday programme on 7 October - the Day of Languages and Cultures.
We are very excited to present our programme for the day.
It will open at 11:30 with a traditional Freemarket of foreign language books. From classic authors to abridged books for easy reading, phrase books and textbooks for children and adults. You can take any books home and bring your own well-read ones hoping they will find a new owner.
At 12:00, for the first time in Syktyvkar, we will welcome your at a multi-language Speak-dating platform - A Date on the Crossroads of Cultures. Speakers in 12 languages will host you at their desk to teach you a few useful words and introduce you to the culture of the language. Italian, English, Spanish, German, French, Finnish, Estonian, Komi, Hungarian, Japanese, Kyrgyz and Hebrew - this is a foreign language mixture that you can try in the span of one hour.
Another item on the programme is a contest for all ages - Spelling Bee. This is an individual and team competition testing your English spelling. Every participant will get a reward; the winners can take home English best-seller books.
Culture is not only about languages. It's about music, food, dance and lifestyle. To illustrate this, join our cooking master-show at 12:00, enjoy an Argentinian tango lesson in the lobby and visit the French salong of Parisian lifestyle.
Foreign language schools have also prepared a few surprises for the guests of the day: quests, games, quizzes and more.
The climax of our programme will be a Skype meeting with the young people from different countries living in Lisbon. They are good friends, notwithstanding cultural nuances and they will share their observations on cross-cultural experiences. Our Lisbon guests are from Portugal, Spain, Mexico, Costa-Rica, the Netherlands, Norway, and France. The main language of the meeting is English, but the guests will also speak in their mother tongues.
Sunday is just a couple of days ahead. Plan your visit to our Crossroads of languages and cultures and enjoy the quality time with your family.
