The Day of the Arctic Online

For seven years in a row, the National Library of the Komi Republic has held the Day of the Arctic. This year, the event went online reaching out to a greater audience. People followed the progress of the event on our website and in the VKontakte social media.

The event took place on 26 February 2021.

The main topics discussed were the development of the Arctic territories, research in the North, environment, cultural projects, and literature about the Arctic.

One item on the programme is created in collaboration with a partner from the Arctic capital of Greenland Nuuk. It is a special feature this year.

The video presentation of the exhibition in the Nuuk Art Museum: Arctic Portraits

A video talk about three female artists who painted the life of the indigenous population of Greenland. Christine Deichmann, Oda Isbrand and Ellen Locher Thalbitzer are not very well-known outside Denmark where they were born, but each of them was a bright individual in visual art introducing a female perspective on the Inuit culture. Arriving in Greenland with their husbands during the colonial rule, they undertook to have a personal mission and vision of life there. The exhibition is named And Wife / Nulialo taking the artists out of their husbands’ shadow. Curator of the museum Stine Lundberg Hansen introduces most famous works of art and argues that Greenlandic female artists are still to be discovered.

The talk is in English with Russian subtitles.

 

The webinar: Business in the Arctic: Promising and Large-scale

The participants focused on support measures for entrepreneurs, successful practices of doing business in the northern territories, taking advantage of the government incentives, planned investment and infrastructure projects.

The online quiz: Expeditions of the XX century

An intellectual battle for students from different regions of Russia tested their knowledge of the history of the Arctic exploration and most famous explorers. The teams competed for the title of the best experts on the subject.

The dispute: The Arctic - the territory of ecology

A traditional student debate with the participation of experts from the Komi Scientific Center of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences gathered students from three universities. Alongside with the colleges in the Komi Republic, the discussion was joined by Murmansk and Arkhangelsk.

The video book review: The Light of the North Comes into our Days

The books in the review center around a wide range of topics: history of exploration and settlements in the North, brave explorers and polar travelers, the Russian icebreaker fleet and Arctic research camps. All the books are recent acquisitions of the library.

Handcrafts for children:  A Pet Reindeer

We make a reindeer out of paper and get acquainted with interesting facts about this unique animal, for example, what color the deer's eyes are.
