Printed Press of the Century: What Was in the News a Hundred Years Ago
Business News Komi Information Agency and the National Library of the Komi Republic have launched a joint project to the centennial anniversary since the foundation of the Komi Autonomous Republic.
Each week a special online column, Printed Press of the Century, will post original texts of newspaper stories published in local papers from 1921 to 2021. From the archive of newspapers the librarians have selected most noteworthy articles reflecting the spirit of the time. What was the agenda of the day? What concerned people? The project will present the digest of the news items covering the most significant events.
If you are interested in the first-hand materials dealing with local history, you can find the printed periodicals in the main reading room of the National Library of Komi. The collection of digitized copies is available in the National E-Library.
The pilot publication of the project is dedicated to the year of 1921. The selected items include headlines and excerpts of newspaper stories covering such events as the opening of the Komi Pedagogical Institute and Central Library, foundation of the national repertory theater company, geological expedition along the Pechora River, financial aide from Komi residents to the victims of the Russian famine of 1921–22, also known as the Povolzhye famine.
The presented archive news stories preserve the original spelling and punctuation characteristic of the time.
The pilot publication at BNKomi are borrowed from two newspapers in Komi and Russian - Udzh (Labour) and Yugyd Tui (Bright Way).
The next publication will be devoted to the 1922 press items. The publication will appear at the BNKomi site once a week till the year of 2021, when the Komi Republic will celebrate its 100th anniversary.
