16 February 2019 Scandinavian Sunday at the Library 17 February our Sunday programme is dedicated to North European countries of Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Iceland. These countries are united not only by geography, but also common history, language family and cultural background.
We invite you to plunge into the age of vikings when Germanic peoples used to reign at sea. The KRECHET History Club will help us reconstruct the material culture of the time presenting medieval clothes and weapons they have made using detailed description of the warriors' attire. You will also meet leaders of the Centre for Medieval Crafts and their collection of handmade objects. The members of the KRECHET Club will tell you about the historical connections between the vikings' culture and Old Russia.
If you love taking unusual photos, you will have a chance to pose for the camera wearing female or male medieval dress reconstructed from head to toe strictly in keeping with the fashion of 1000 A.D.
Our smaller guests will take part in a historic quiz and read children's authors of North European countries together with the talented animators from the Bendfort Language School. The playground named Roads of Whales and Swans will engage kids in thematic games and also teach them face painting for a talent show.
The literature corner, Up the Waves of Northern Europe, will introduce literature from Denmark, Iceland, Norway and Sweden. Reading and discussing texts from medieval sagas to modern poetry, you will fully perceive the sobriety, persistence and power of the northern temper. We have selected the best examples of tales about heroic deeds, skald chants and modern novels and poetry to recite.
For refreshments, we will open our Scandinavian Cafe from Chef Daniil Litvin who will prepare a few culinary surprises for you to try. |
